Create and register devices

A device has to exist in the system before it can be registered under an Organization, and it has to be registered before it can collect data for a Measurement Point.

User Permissions

Creating a device, registering it under an Organization, and unregistering it are Global Admin only. So is the unregistered device pool itself — other roles never see it.

Before you begin​

  • Know the serial number of the unit
  • Know which Organization the device belongs to
  • (Optional) Decide whether to assign the device to a Measurement Point right away

Create a device​

Only needed for a unit the system does not know yet. Devices that already reported in appear in the pool on their own.

  1. Open Devices and find the Not assigned device available: panel
  2. Click Create device
  3. Fill in the form — only Serial number is required:

  1. Click Register

Empty fields are not submitted, so leave blank anything you do not have. The device type defaults to Chester 3.4 — change it if you are creating a different unit.

After the device is created it lands in the unregistered pool, and the Manage files dialog opens so you can attach a datasheet or protocol while you have it at hand. This step is optional; files can be added later from the device's Files button.

Duplicate communication identifier

"A device with this communication identifier already exists" means the identifier is taken. It is derived in this order: IMSI, otherwise LoRa Dev EUI, otherwise the serial number. Check whichever of those you filled in.

Register a device under an Organization​

  1. Open Devices and expand the Not assigned device available: panel with Show
  2. Click Assign on the device card
  3. In the Assign device dialog select:
    • the Organization (required)
    • a Measurement Point (optional)
  4. Click Assign

Selecting a Measurement Point registers and assigns in a single step. Leaving it empty registers the device only.

The point may already be taken

If the selected Measurement Point already has a device, the dialog warns you and names the device currently assigned. Continuing replaces that assignment, so check you picked the right point.

Outcomes​

  • Registered only — the device appears in the Organization under Available devices
  • Registered and assigned — the device appears under Assigned devices for the selected Measurement Point and starts uploading data for it
Moving between Organizations

Moving a device to another Organization requires unregistering it first, then registering it under the new one. Both actions are Global Admin only.
